When I am working with clients I often hear, "I love it, but I am nervous." The biggest risks in decorating always offer the biggest rewards. It is my job to make sure it works. Look for the "gasp factor". If you gasp when you see it, you're probably meant to have it.
Design with Meaning
It may be an old picture or a table from your Grandmother. Items in your home that mean something speak volumes. They also express who you are. Always keep things that mean something to you; it provides character and a story.
Take Your Time
Rome wasn't built in a day. Decorating your home should be an organic process, not forced. Finding the perfect lamp or rug takes time. Every wall and space does not have to be full. Just find the pieces you love and places they fit.
When we work together it needs to be a collaboration. The designer is the steering wheel, brakes and gas pedal. You are the car and driver!
When working with clients, they often surprise themselves at the end of the job realizing everything they choose has a flow and works together because it comes from them. I am simply your guide. Have faith in your own taste; it is consistent even if you don't know it.
Take a Risk
For example: paint the ceiling...paint the floor! This element is often ignored and shouldn't be. Floors and ceilings are a major part of the room and should work with the whole concept.
Major in Minor Things
Something as small as a pillow can change the whole look of a room. Remember, one big accent piece you love is worth 1,000 small ones.
Go Big or Go Home
Choose things you absolutely love, always. Don't be safe or follow the trends. Anyone can buy an entire display in a furniture store. They don't need to match perfectly. If you love it all, it will all work, I promise.
Use a trunk for a table, hang a tray on the wall, make something into a lamp. Lighting can be hung anywhere...corners, over a chair, over a night stand, even over a mirror.
Decorating should be fun! The whole process should be enjoyable and rewarding. There is nothing better than watching color go up on a wall, installing fabulous window treatments or just adding great pillows to an existing sofa. Remember, there are no rules...we hate rules!
